What grey glass does
Grey tinted glass is coloured right through during manufacture, so the tint cannot scratch or peel off. It cuts glare and some of the sun's heat, softens strong light and makes a room harder to see into from outside in the daytime. It looks smoky grey from outside and slightly darker from inside, without changing colours much.
Privacy: day and night
In daylight, when it is brighter outside than inside, grey glass makes it harder to see in. At night, with lights on inside, people outside can see in. For full-time privacy choose frosted or patterned glass, or add blinds.
Where it is used
- West and north-facing windows to cut glare.
- Table tops and shelves over dark bases, where clear glass would look green.
- Cabinet doors and wardrobe fronts for a darker, modern look.
- Balustrade and pool fence infill panels, toughened.
- Shopfronts and office partitions that need less glare.
Which thickness?
4mm to 6mm for framed windows and cabinet doors, 8mm for small table tops and shelves, 10mm or 12mm for large tops and frameless panels. Grey glass can be toughened, and any panel in a door, a bathroom or near the floor should be.
Matching existing glass
Grey tints vary slightly between makers and thicknesses, and thicker grey glass looks darker. When replacing one pane in a set, use the same thickness as the panes next to it.
Grey glass for table tops
Grey glass is popular for dining and coffee tables on black, dark timber or metal bases, where clear glass would show a green edge. It hides fingerprints and dust a little better than clear glass and makes the table base look less busy. For a table, choose 10mm or 12mm toughened with polished edges, and add safety corners or rounded corners on a rectangular top.
Grey glass for windows
For a window that gets the afternoon sun, grey glass cuts glare without blocking the view. It reduces the light coming in as well as the heat, so a room may need a little more lighting on dull days.

Questions
Does tinted glass give privacy at night?
Not on its own. At night, with lights on inside, people can see in. For full-time privacy choose frosted or patterned glass.
Is grey glass the same as a tinted film?
No. Grey glass is coloured all the way through when it is made, so it cannot scratch, bubble or peel. Film is stuck to the surface of clear glass and can be removed.
Can grey glass be toughened?
Yes. It is toughened the same way as clear glass after it is cut to size. Choose toughening on the product page.
Do you have bronze or green tinted glass?
Online we supply grey tinted glass from 4mm to 12mm. Email us if you need another tint and we will check what is available.
Does grey glass block heat?
It absorbs part of the sun's heat and cuts glare, so a room feels less harsh. For a bigger reduction in heat, ask us about glass options for your window.
Will grey glass match my existing windows?
Usually, if it is the same thickness. Tints vary a little between makers, so compare a sample or the edge colour if an exact match matters.
