Acid etched, sandblasted or film?

Our frosted glass is acid etched, often sold under the name Satin Etch. The etching gives an even satin finish that resists fingerprints and wipes clean. Sandblasted glass has a rougher surface that marks more easily, and frosted film can peel and bubble in a steamy bathroom. If a quote or plan says Satin Etch, this is the glass.

Where it is used

• Bathroom windows and shower screens. Full privacy with plenty of light.
• Office and home partitions. Separate a room without making it dark.
• Front door sidelights and laundry doors.
• Splashbacks and cabinet doors where you want a soft white look.

Which side faces out?

Only one face is etched. In a shower or a kitchen, put the smooth face on the wet or greasy side so it is easy to clean. In a window, the etched face usually goes inside, away from the weather.

Which thickness?

4mm to 6mm for framed windows, doors and cabinets; 10mm or 12mm for frameless shower screens and free-standing partitions. Any frosted panel in a door, a bathroom or low to the floor should be toughened.

Frosted, Satinlite or reeded?

All three let light through and block the view, but they look different. Acid etched frosted glass is smooth and even, like a soft white sheet. Satinlite is a patterned glass with a fine textured surface, often used in older houses and for budget bathroom windows. Reeded glass has vertical ribs that blur the view while showing more light and movement. For the most private, cleanest look, choose acid etched.

Replacing a frosted window

Check whether the old glass is frosted, patterned or covered with film: run a fingernail over both sides. Etched glass feels smooth and satiny on one face; patterned glass has a raised texture; film has an edge you can lift. Measure the glass inside the frame and match the old thickness, usually 4mm or 5mm in older houses.

• Bathroom window: 4mm or 5mm acid etched, toughened if it is low or near the bath.
• Front door sidelight: 6mm toughened.
• Frameless shower panel: 10mm toughened, polished edges.
• Office partition: 10mm or 12mm toughened.
