Choosing glass shelves in Perth

More details and price examples

Thickness by span

The right thickness depends on the distance between supports and how much weight sits on the shelf. As a guide for evenly loaded shelves supported at both ends:

  • 6mm up to about 600mm between supports, for light items such as glasses and ornaments.
  • 8mm up to about 800mm, for books, plates and general display.
  • 10mm up to about 1000mm, or for heavier loads.
  • 12mm for long shelves, floating shelves on hidden brackets and heavy loads.

Shelves supported only along the back edge (floating shelves) need to be thicker than shelves with supports at both ends.

Toughened or not?

Toughened glass is several times stronger and breaks into small blunt pieces. We recommend it for bathroom shelves, open shelving, anything reached across, and every shelf over 600mm long. Untoughened shelves are fine for small, lightly loaded shelves inside a closed cabinet.

How to measure

  • Measure inside the cabinet or niche at the front and the back and use the smaller figure.
  • Take 2–3mm off the length so the shelf drops in without scraping, and allow for any shelf pins or clips.
  • For the depth, measure from the back wall to where the front edge should sit; most cabinet shelves sit 10–20mm back from the door.

Clear or low iron?

Clear glass shows a green edge, which is more noticeable when shelves are stacked or lit. Low iron shelves look whiter and suit display lighting and white joinery.

Common shelf jobs

  • Bathroom niche shelves: 6mm or 8mm toughened, polished, cut 2–3mm smaller than the niche.
  • Kitchen and bar display shelves: 8mm or 10mm toughened, often in low iron under LED strips.
  • Bookcase and cabinet shelves: 10mm toughened for spans up to about a metre.
  • Floating wall shelves: 10mm or 12mm toughened on concealed brackets.
  • Retail and gallery display: 10mm or 12mm low iron, polished.

Rounded or safety corners

Shelves where people walk past or reach in, like bathroom shelves, are nicer with safety (tipped) corners or a small radius on the front corners. Both options are on the product page.

Questions

How thick should a glass shelf be?

It depends on the length between supports and what sits on it. 6mm suits short shelves in cabinets supported at both ends. For longer spans or heavier items go to 8mm or 10mm, and use 10mm or 12mm for floating or bracket shelves. See the shelf thickness guide.

Should my shelf be toughened?

For most shelves, yes. Toughened glass is much stronger and breaks into small blunt pieces. Untoughened shelves are only sensible for small, lightly loaded shelves inside a closed cabinet.

Can you make a shelf with rounded corners or holes?

Not through the online calculator. Email us your drawing and we will price it.

What size should I order for a cabinet?

Measure inside the cabinet and take off a few millimetres on each dimension so the shelf drops in without scraping. The guide on measuring explains how much to allow.

Should the front edge be polished?

Yes. Polished edges are selected by default. The front edge is the one you see and touch, and a polished edge is smooth and looks finished.

Can I get a shelf with a curved front?

Not through the online calculator. Email us a drawing and we will quote a shaped shelf.

How much weight can a glass shelf hold?

It depends on the thickness, the span and how it is supported. A 10mm toughened shelf 900mm long, supported at both ends, comfortably holds a row of books. For heavy or long shelves go thicker or add a support in the middle.

Do you supply shelf brackets?

No, we supply the glass only. Most shelf pins, clips and brackets suit 6mm to 12mm glass; check the bracket maker's thickness range before you order.
